Forestry

One in five workers in the forestry and logging industries experience noise-related hearing loss. Most of the danger comes from the lengthy exposure to skidders, chainsaws, feller-bunchers, etc.

Researchers went into the field and examined the decibel levels of the machinery and found that most of it (83%) exceeded the OSHA standard of safe levels.

Despite these risks, the workers, when questioned, revealed they went without hearing protection 16% of the time. Interestingly, studies proved that hearing loss accumulates over time, with older workers showing significantly more damage than younger workers and positively correlating the years of work in the industry with higher hearing loss.

Logging is the backbone of Southern industry. It’s hard, sweaty work that starts early in the morning and goes until sundown. You wouldn’t go onto the job site without your steel-toed boots. Don’t go without hearing protection, either.
